Giveaway from Zainey Laney (CLOSED)

I am excited to share this giveaway with you guys today. I met Laney through the Female Geek Bloggers group, and I was lucky enough to be chosen to do a giveaway for her Etsy shop! Her pieces are so fun, and there's something for almost every fandom imaginable. I have the Ana/Olaf necklace, and I have people ask me all the time where I got it from.
Ana and Olaf

Wizard of Oz

Michonne from The Walking Dead

As you can see, these necklaces are really fun, and definitely unique. A great addition to any geek's wardrobe, especially if you're looking for something that showcases one of your favorite fandoms, but doesn't scream it in a high school, Hot Topic kind of way. Laney also has a YouTube channel where she does unboxings and things like that, so you can get a sense of her personality and really feel like your getting to know whose creating the jewelry you're buying.

Laney has generously offered to give one of my readers a $25 credit to her Etsy store, so you can pick up one of her fabulous pieces! This giveaway starts today and will run until February 5th, 2015. The rules are as usual- completing any of the entries with a giveaway only account will disqualify you from the giveaway. I cannot stress that enough, no giveaway accounts!!! Winner will be notified by email around February 5th. Once the winner had received the email, they will have 48 hours to respond or a new winner will be chosen. If you can't wait to see if you've won, Laney has offered a discount code for her store, good for 20% off your order. Enter ZAINEYGEEK until January 31st to take advantage of that code :)

Good luck! And don't forget to visit ZaineyLaney on Etsy, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter

Con*Quest Journal Review and Giveaway

Today I am beyond excited to share with you this Con*Quest Journal! I started talking about it yesterday in the Convention Goer Gift Guide, but I had to stop myself because it would've given away the surprise! Yes, this is the item you get a chance to win!

I have a deep love for journals, notebooks, scrapbooks....anything that I can turn into keepsake. I've always been like that. I find that as I get older though, I don't have the time to spend to sit down and create the elaborate layouts for scrapbooks like I used to. When Smashbooks came onto the scene a few years back, I really embraced those because the pages already came patterned, and all you had to do was jot down your thoughts, stick in your ticket stubs or what have you, and you were done. Instant memory book. So when I saw that the Con*Quest journal had the sustainability of a scrapbook, but with the ease of a Smashbook, I was sold. I reached out to Shelley, the creator of this fabulous journal, to do this giveaway, and I was floored when she said she'd love to. And then I just about fainted when she said I could have one to review!!

I had to take my journal outside to photograph, because my house was not built with lighting in mind. But this is how it comes, right out of the box. Theres a Sharpie included, so you can just pick it up and go out onto the convention floor. There's a band on the journal that will keep it nice and closed.

Once you open the journal, there is an introduction page that explains how things work. Then you flip to the next page and you see this guy, Questly. Super fun side note, Shelley recently held a contest to name this little guy, and I suggested Questly. I was so surprised when I found out that she chose that name as the winner! Anyway, each area of the journal is broken up into "quests". First up is autographs, then artists, vendors, cosplay, panel, peeps and city.

There are a few pages for each "quest" and you can buy refill pages on the Con*Quest journal website for just $5.00. I think the Panel Quest pages are especially neat because sometimes celebrities say really memorable things, and later when you want to blog about it, you'll have it written down. I know when I went to a few Nerd HQ panels this year, there were quotes I thought for sure I could remember, and then when I came home I just could not think of them. Luckily they put those panels on YouTube, but that isn't the case for everything, so this definitely comes in handy for those moments.

The City Quest is another one I really like. If you're attending conventions that aren't in your hometown, then this is a good way to remember places to eat, stay, visit, etc that are good. There are also spaces to write down what places are not so good. That way, you don't have to worry about making the same mistake next time you're in town.

In the back on the journal there are four protectors that are perfect for putting 8x10 photos in, plus one sheet for storing business cards. Theres also a huge zip up envelope for ticket stubs, stickers, or any other loose item you want to keep that doesn't have a space on the pages.

Every page has vibrant coloring, and the paper quality is very good. And since its a binder, there is lots of room for expansion. There are also two buying options, which I didn't mention at the beginning. You can buy the journal with a really neat canvas tote bag or you can buy the journal by itself. The tote bag has an extra long strap (or maybe I'm just short), so you can use it cross body and it will fit over any bulky costume pieces. I don't know about you guys, but I'm a sucker for a bag just as much as I am a notebook, so the fact that you can get both together was a major plus for me :)

Now here's the super exciting part for you guys. You get a chance to win one of these bad boys!! This contest is open internationally. It starts today, November 29th, 2014 and will end on December 7th, 2014. A winner will be chosen on or around that date. The winner will be notified by email that they've won, and will then have 48 hours to respond to that email. If no response is received within that time period, a new winner will be chosen. Giveaway or promo only accounts are not eligible for winning, and if you use one, you will be disqualified. I cannot stress that enough. If you're like me and just love this journal so much that you want it now, use code TURKEY on the Con*Quest website  today until Monday, December 1, 2014 for free shipping on your order. Thanks so much for stopping by and good luck!!

Jordandene' Shirt Review and Giveaway (CLOSED)

I have said it before, but it bears repeating, the Female Geek Blogger group has given me the opportunity to meet so many talented and cool geeky chicks. It has been such a treat to see what these girls have been writing and creating. One of these ladies is Jordan, owner of Jordandene'. She makes discreetly geeky shirts, tanks, and sweatshirts, and some not-so discreetly geeky aprons (that are amazing!).

I was fortunate enough to receive a tank to review, and let me just say, I love it! I chose the Carl Sagan Something Incredible Tank and it is so soft. The construction is on par with something you'd purchase in a store, the lettering is great quality, and did I mention how soft it is?! I really can't say enough great things about this tank, its fabulous!

Now here's the super exciting part for you guys. You have the chance to win one! Starting today and running through November 23rd, 2014, you have the opportunity to win either a shirt or a tank top of your choice from Jordandene'! And if you just can't wait to see if you've won, use promo code FANGIRL2014 for 20% off of your order on her site.

This giveaway is international- yay! Just remember, no giveaway or promo only accounts are allowed for this giveaway, or your entries will be disqualified. Also, the winner will be notified by email on November 24th. Winner will then have 48 hours to respond to said email or a new winner will be chosen. Thanks so much for stopping by and good luck!!

(And for some reason, the picture on the Rafflecopter widget for my FB page is not the correct one, but it does take you to my page. Don't know what's up with that, but feel free to stop by and say hi!)

Boutique Academia Giveaway (CLOSED)

Happy Saturday everyone! Being a member of the Female Geek Blogger group has given me the opportunity to  meet so many cool girls. This giveaway is brought to you by one of them. Boutique Academia is geek chic jewelry on a higher level. Math and science jewelry has never looked so cool. Upon my first visit to the Boutique Academia site, I got a major case of the I-wants! There are so many pieces dedicated to constellations (which I love), and the Anatomical Heart necklace was an instant favorite.

The Anatomical Heart Necklace comes in two different metals.

Maile, the owner of Boutique Academia, has graciously offered a choice of three necklaces for this giveaway. She let me choose three that I thought would resonate best with my readers, which I think is pretty awesome. One lucky winner will get to choose between the Anatomical Heart Necklace (above), the Molecule necklace, and the Tardis Necklace. I still have yet to watch an episode of Doctor Who, but I know many of you do, and I wanted a Doctor Who neckalce option included for you guys.

Extra Life and a Giveaway! (GIVEAWAY CLOSED)

Doing Play Live this summer gave me the opportunity to combine two things I really enjoy, playing video games and raising money and awareness for a good cause. And while I still continue to fundraise through Play Live, the atmosphere has changed a bit since the big summer event is over. I was looking for something to get that feeling back, and I found it in Extra Life. Having been a member of the International Geek Girl Pen Pals Club for a while now, I was stoked that they had a team participating in Extra Life. I requested to join immediately, and was welcomed with open arms.

What is Extra Life? Well, its much like Play Live, except this benefits Children's Miracle Network hospitals. And instead of just playing for a general organization, you can actually choose a hospital to support. I was fortunate enough to have one of our local hospitals be a CMN member, so I will be raising money for them. But every girl on Team IGGLES is raising money for a different hospital, and I think that's pretty amazing. The money raised is given to the specific CMN hospital the donor chooses and it is up to that hospital to decide how its used. It can be anything from research to supplies to paying medical costs of patients.

This year's Extra Life event is October 25th. Its a 24 hour marathon of every type of gaming imaginable. Tabletop gaming has even been encouraged! I will be streaming Hearthstone every day this week in honor of the event, my Twitch account can be found here

And while I love a good reason to play games, I can't do this on my own. And that's where you come in, my fabulous readers. I have been lucky enough to partner up with Shawna of Scrawny Girl and Gwen of A Geek and Her Oven to offer one lucky reader some pretty awesome prizes. All you have to do is donate $5 to CMN. Easy peasy, right? In addition to these prizes, Shawna has given all readers a discount code to use in her shops, good until November 7th. Just type in EXTRALIFE for 25% off of your orders. Sweet!

Etsy Storenvy Blog

Storenvy Blog

In addition to these prizes, I will be giving away a copy of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Its gaming themed, and has more pop culture references than you can shake a stick at. Sounds like my kind of book :) Miscellaneous Halloween stickers and stationary will also be coming your way.

All rules regarding this giveaway can be found on the Rafflecopter widget in the Terms and Conditions section, but I'll give you a few basic ones. This giveaway starts today, October 13th and is open internationally!!! Yes! However, to be eligible, you have to donate $5 to Extra Life through my donor page (link in the Rafflecopter widget, also on the sidebar of this blog and right here). This is mandatory. If you lie about donating to open the other options, all of your entries will be disqualified. Giveaway and promo-only accounts are not allowed and all entries associated with them will also be disqualified. Contest ends on October 23, 2014 at Midnight Pacific Daylight Time. The winner will be chosen and notified by email on October 24. Winner then has 48 hours to respond to the email, or a new winner will be chosen. Thank you very much for donating and good luck!!

UPDATE 10/16/14: As announced yesterday on Twitter, if five people donate to Extra Life, a Loot Crate will be added as a prize. I will purchase the Loot Crate, then it will be sent directly to you from Loot Crate. The addition of the Loot Crate will put the prize value of this giveaway at over $60. Donate just $5 for over $60 worth of super awesome prizes. That's a pretty sweet deal.

UPDATE 10/19/14/; The donating part of the giveaway is no longer mandatory, but is strongly encouraged. The Loot Crate will not be a part of the giveaway prizes unless five (5) people donate to Extra Life.

What's In My Bag- SDCC Edition (GIVEAWAY CLOSED)

Its that time, people! No more counting down the months until San Diego Comic Con, its now just days away! Today I'm sharing what I plan on taking to SDCC with  me, what I recommend you bring with you, and....there's a tiny, non St Jude related giveaway at the bottom of all this :) So lets get started.

1. You will need something to haul your goodies. Yes, you get that free bag when you come into the convention, but I find them not at all practical for my hauling needs and usually just fold it up and put it in my backpack. Backpacks or messenger bags are my bags of choice for conventions, but everyone has a preference. I just like them because you can distribute weight evenly across your back (backpack) or switch shoulders accordingly (messenger bag).

2. Cash or Credit Cards. Nobody fools with checks anymore, just don't do it. And sometimes, people don't mess with credit or debit cards either, so cash is always a good idea. Large amounts are not recommended, if it gets lost or stolen, well, you're out a lot of money. I say, bring $50-100 cash per day, and leave your cards for the rest.

3. Pens, pens and more pens! Or at least enough that if you lose one (or two), you will have another for those impromptu "Can I have your autograph!?" moments. I like Sharpies because they don't usually smear, but again, its really your preference. Also, the scrapbooker in my says to chose something acid and lignin free, so they will last as long as you need it too.

4. Notebook, sketchbook or other writing surface. This goes along with the pens. If you run into a celebrity, you need to be prepared. I like to carry a Moleskin or Mini Smashbook with me for just that occasion. They also make really awesome mini scrapbooks. Wristbands, ticket stubs, stickers, etc can all be put into it at random, and you come away with a fun souvenir at the end of the con.

5. Medication and bandages. I have carried a mini pharmacy with me ever since jr high (maybe that's why I chose it as my career path lol). The Girl Scout in me lives by that Boy Scout motto of Alway Be Prepared. I'm not suggesting bringing prescription meds into the convention (unless you absolutely need them), because they run the risk of getting stolen. I'm talking the travel size painkillers, anti-diarrheals, Dramamine (random nausea is an issue for me), those types of medications. You don't want to miss out on anything because of an upset tummy or a raging headache. I also carry a travel size first aid kit with me, because I'm clumsy and nobody wants me bleeding all over their merchandise.

6. Personal care items, whatever that means to you. I like to bring hand sanitizer (usually more than one bottle) with me, because I'm a little germophobic. I think that comes with being a mom. I wasn't as obsessive about germs until I had kids. I also carry flushable wipes, because sometimes you have to use that stall without toilet paper. Some people bring toothbrushes and things to the convention for touchups throughout the day, I just bring a lot of gum.

7. Electronics. (Cell phone, camera, iPod, Nintendo DS, etc) Bring at your own risk, but if you want a way to unwind or to capture those "OMG I can't believe that just happened/that's so cool/WTF moments", you will need to bring at least one of those items. That also entails bringing the proper accoutrements. Extra batteries, charging wires, whatever. I personally bring my phone and camera, and then hope they don't die. I am notorious for leaving my charging wires at the hotel or even at home, meaning I usually have to go out and buy some aftermarket wire.

8. Snacks. Convention food is way overpriced and not that great, so I like to bring in my own snacks. Dried fruit, fruit snacks, 100 calorie packs of anything are usually good enough to hold me over until we can find a restaurant to go to, and they are small enough that they don't add a lot of bulk to my bag. My husband will usually bring his Camelback with him, so we just drink from there as needed.

9. A deck of cards. Or any other small, portable game. I haven't had the pleasure of waiting in that Hall H line, but I've heard its a doozy. What better way to bond with your fellow con goers and choke back the boredom than with a game? Cards Against Humanity is great for those with a twisted sense of humor, Uno is nice for those who might be a little more timid. Or just bring a regular deck of cards. You can play countless games with it, and they double as a nice writing surface should you run into a celebrity and you don't have anything else for them to sign.

10. Poster tube. This is not a bag item, but you will definitely need one. We bought one at WonderCon this year for $10 and it was a good investment. Our posters came home in one piece; I can't say the same for other years when we just rolled them and put them in the bag.

So those are my SDCC must haves. Did I miss anything? And since I rely on these items so much, I thought I'd share some of them with one lucky winner! I know its not as cool as The Nerd Fu's Comic Con Survival Pack giveaway, but its my way of sharing my SDCC excitement with all of you! Also, you can enter this even if you're not attending a convention any time soon, I seriously carry most of this in my car/purse at all times.

Prize includes:
*1 Smash journal
*1 Smash gluestick/pen combo
*1 roll of Scotch comic washi tape
*2 black Sharpies
*1 Bandaid travel first aid kit
*1 travel pack of Cottonelle flushable wipes
*1 pack of  Doublemint gum
*1 Dial hand sanitizer
*1 travel sized Advil
*2 sheets of stomach relief tablets

A Quick WoW Wednesday

Happy Wednesday everyone! This WoW Wednesday will be quick, as there's not much going on.

We're in the home stretch of the Midsummer Fire Festival. I haven't even done the quests this year on any of my toons (aside from honoring and desecrating some flames). I just don't have love for this holiday, and I've been really focused messing around with my 90 on Timeless Isle. The Midsummer Fire Festival runs until this weekend.  Don't forget to watch the fireworks on the Fourth of July! Also, the Darkmoon Faire will be back on Sunday- yay!

And for some exciting news, I have paired with Neri at Mama Needs Mama for a fantastic giveaway! You have the opportunity to win the badass Warforged Mount for World of Warcraft and a $15 iTunes gift card. Visit her site to enter! I wish I could enter this giveaway, I love this mount! And the hitching post that comes with it to transform your party's mounts is pretty awesome as well.

PS  Just a little note to remind you of the League of Legends giveaway that I'm currently having. Remember, you have to donate through my donor page to be eligible, or all of your entries will be disqualified.

Play Live and Loot- $10 League of Legends Card! (GIVEAWAY CLOSED)

Hello everyone, and happy Friday! I am having another giveaway in support of St Jude. This time its for a $10 League of Legends card. I have been having a lot of fun streaming my game play, although my laptop can't seem to handle streaming WoW, so I've only been streaming Hearthstone.

The rules for the giveaway are outlined in the Rafflecopter widget, but I will briefly review them here. You have to donate to St Jude via my donor page to be eligible to win. You can donate $1 or $100, it doesn't matter. Every donation is greatly appreciated, and every donation counts as ten entries. Also, this one will be for US addresses only, and thats because the LoL card says its only valid in the United States. If you lie about donating to get access to the other entry options, all of your entries will be erased. If you use a giveaway account, you will be disqualified. This contest will end on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at midnight PDT. I will contact the winner by email. The winner then has 48 hours to respond, and if no response is received in that timeframe, a new winner will be chosen.

Thank you for your support and good luck!

So About That Last Giveaway.....

Congratulations to Nicole! You are the winner of the iTunes gift card! So check your email....its a lengthy one lol.

If an iTunes gift card wasn't your cup of tea, next week I will be giving away a $10 League of Legends card, good for the purchase of...whatever it is you buy in LoL.

This giveaway was a bit of an eye opener for me. I found that people didn't want to enter if they had to donate. I get that. Times are difficult. But for any of the giveaways I'm doing that are specifically to raise money for St Jude, that's going to be mandatory. The thing is, you don't have to donate a lot. You could donate one dollar and not only be eligible for the prize, but I would be pleased as punch that you donated. I hate that people might've felt like I was looking for a huge amount, because I'm not. Its true that I set my goal at $100 by today, and no, I haven't reached it, but that's okay. As long as I reach it by the end of the fundraiser (September 1st), I will still feel proud of  myself for accomplishing that goal. And I will be so grateful for everyone that helped me reach it (I'm already so thankful for the donations I've received.). I will be holding at least one giveaway thats not St Jude related (because I love you guys), but the option to donate will still be there (it just won't be mandatory).

With this giveaway I also learned that people will be deceitful, and that's so wrong. I advertise my giveaways on Instagram as a way to get fresh eyes to my blog. I had someone who seemed really interested in entering comment on it over there. Well.....she lied about donating to St Jude to unlock all the extra entries. And then she lied about the information needed for extra entries. I thought I was clear when I said that I verify. And the fact that the donating to St Jude option wasn't really an option, but was mandatory to unlock the rest....I don't understand how anyone could think it was okay to lie.

This whole thing has been a learning experience. I have to accept it as such and move on, and next week's giveaway will hopefully go a lot smoother.

Play Live is now LIVE! And There's Loot! (GIVEAWAY CLOSED)

Happy Friday the 13th everyone! Just a quick note to let you know that St Jude's Play Live fundraiser is now in fact, live. So donating can now begin :) As I stated in my previous post, it is my goal to raise $100 by June 20th, 2014 and if I did, I would have a giveaway. Well, I was perusing some of the other players' donor pages, and they are offering prizes throughout the fundraiser. A lot of them have business sponsors though, so their prizes are pretty neat (and pricey). And while I can't offer you things like new consoles or headphones, I can offer some smaller things that are still pretty cool. So I thought to get things started, I would offer up a $15 iTunes gift card. Its summertime, so that calls for conventions and road trips and barbeques....all things that require an awesome soundtrack. All I'm asking is that you make a donation to St Jude's through my donor page, and that's it. Once you donate, the other options to earn extra entries will unlock. Also, the donating option is open every day, so you can donate as frequently as you like. There is also no donating minimum, meaning you can donate as much or as little as you feel appropriate .

This giveaway is for US addresses only, and the reason for that is, I'm not sure how international donating works for the fundraiser. If one of my international readers would like to give it a try and let me know how it goes, I will gladly open this, and all future giveaway pertaining to the Play Live fundraiser internationally. The winner will be notified on June 21st, 2014 by email. From that time, the winner will have 48 hours to respond to the email or a new winner will be chosen. Accounts used for solely for giveaway purposes will be disqualified. Also, if you unlock the ability to tweet about the giveaway, please have your account public on June 21st. If you are private and I can't verify your tweet, that entry will be disqualified as well.

Thank you all so much for helping me reach this goal. Good luck!

Krystelle's Book Club- Camp Boyfriend and Camp Payback by J.K. Rock Reviews

Remember a few Recentlys back when I hinted that I had something fun coming up relating to Camp Boyfriend? Well, its finally here! The second book in the series, Camp Payback has just been released, and in honor, the publishers are having a giveaway! To avoid a seriously long post, I've broken this thing up in two, and the giveaway is in the post above. This post will contain my review of both books, and a guest post about payback written by one of the authors of the book.

This is the first time I've ever worked with a publisher, so I hope I'm doing this right :) I feel like I should let you know that I received e-versions of both Camp Boyfriend and Camp Payback for free in exchange for my honest review of the books. Additionally, I have no part in the giveaway that's listed in the other post. That is all the publisher's doing. But it is open internationally, and the prizes are pretty awesome. Also, you might want to check out some of the other blogs on this tour. Its been interesting to read what other bloggers think of the books.

Camp Boyfriend
Camp Boyfriend is the first book in the Camp series. We meet Lauren, a girl who has spent the last year living a lie. Due to a move from New York to Texas, she has seized the chance to reinvent herself from nerd girl to popular cheerleader, hot football boyfriend included. As we meet her on the last day of her sophomore year, she struggles with this, and she can't wait to get away from it all and get back to her nerdy self at Camp Juniper Point. There she has a great group of nerdy girls, and an equally nerdy camp boyfriend named Seth. But just when she thinks she's about to get out, football hottie Matt tells her that he's having some family issues that he needs to escape from, and he's coming to camp with her; foiling her plans to breaking up with him before her departure to camp. From there, Lauren's summer is spent trying to figure out if she wants the jock or the geek, in addition to trying to figure out if there is some balance between her own new identity versus her old one. Her new look and interests have hurt her old friends in Munchies Manor, while simultaneously making the Divas Den (their cabin's most hated rivals) much  more invested in her life.

There was a lot I loved about this book. Lauren reminded me a lot of Liz from MTV's My Life as Liz, except in the reverse. While Liz was a Texas girl who had been popular until she decided not to be by expressing her like for comics, etc, Lauren was a New York transplant who took her move to Texas as an opportunity to reinvent herself as a non-nerd. I think a lot of people would change their circumstance if given the chance, so its easy to relate to. And while at camp, Lauren's cabin mates reminded me of a modern day Babysitter's Club, minus their need to watch children. There is a Claudia in free spirited and artistic Trinity, a Mary Anne in uber uptight and smart girl Siobhan, a Kristy in extremely athletic girl Jackie, a Stacey in boy fixated Alex, and a Dawn in Earth loving Piper. The story really flowed well, and I read it in about a day. I just had to know which boy Lauren had chosen and if things with her family worked out (They were a bit Sixteen Candles towards her. Not forgetting her birthday- but the focus was on her sister getting married, and not at all on an academic pursuit she was hoping for.). It ends how you would expect it to, which is fun, but it also leaves you wanting more.

Camp Payback
I started reading Camp Payback right away. This time, the story is mainly focused on Alex, the drama queen at camp who has be reserved the rest of the year because of her famous parents. Her parents write a blog called Wholesome Home, and it highlights all their parenting successes (her brother Andrew) and all their failures (Alex). After a vindictive camp ex-boyfriend sends her a text that gets her a guaranteed spot to an all girls school, Alex is determined to have the most fun and get in the most trouble she can this summer at Camp Juniper Point- her summer of payback to her parents. The catch? Her parents are up for a reality show, and some time during the summer, a camera crew will be popping in on Alex. Not to mention Alex's crush happens to be a boy who is working at the camp to stay out of a group home because his mom is in prison....

I have to admit that while I was eager to start the book, once I started it, I had to put it down for a bit. It wasn't because the writing is horrible, because its not. It was more of a preference thing for me. The premise of Alex's parents blogging was a big draw for me, not only because I am a blogger, but because I follow a few parenting/lifestyle blogs and sometimes I think to myself "I wonder if they would've done that if they knew they weren't going to be blogging about it later?" What made me put it down at first is that its told in a split perspective- half told by Alex, and the other half by Javier, the worker boy whose mom is in prison. I am not a fan of stories told that way, its a huge reason why I have yet to finish Allegiant. Anyway, after leaving the book to settle for a few days, I picked it up again. While I didn't care for the way the story was told, I did care how it ended. I was eager to see how Alex's life turned out, and even Javier's.

The book dealt with heavier issues than Camp Boyfriend, but it was done in a way that wasn't preachy and that YA audiences can relate to. There were some new characters brought in that I thought were a little underdeveloped and underused, but now that I know there's a third book being written (yay!), perhaps they'll get more time in the next story.

My rating *3.6/5*

 Payback, Karen style J
By J.K. Rock

In our April release, CAMP PAYBACK, our main character, Alex Martineau, is determined to get payback against her parents and her ex-boyfriend. His disgusting text prompted them to banish her to a super-strict all-girls school when summer’s over. All she has is two months to have fun and get into a little, innocent trouble. And I can relate! As a teenager, my eleventh grade Social teacher took discipline to Hitler level. In fact, he was impressed with the Nazis and spent a lot of time making fun of the ‘weak’ Mussolini and the Italians in WWII. This really bugged me and my friend Laura because we were the only two Italians in the class, besides hot Greg Brienza who slept through most of class and never noticed.

I was one of those girls like Kayla, the main character in our third novel in the series, CAMP FORGET-ME-NOT, who never said her real thoughts out loud. I was too afraid of making other people upset or that they wouldn't like me. But my best friend, Laura, was- and still is- like an extension of me. I could tell her anything. We talked a lot about how much we hated our Social teacher for making insulting comments about Italians. Worse yet, Mr. M would point to Laura and I (and a dozing Greg) after saying them and ask us if we agreed. As if! Since Laura was quiet (in front of adults) like me, she just shrugged. But inside, she was boiling too, especially when Mr. M made jokes to get the rest of the class laughing at Italians.

Christmas came and a brilliant, but risky payback plan came to us while we were in the mall. We passed a store that sold cheap lingerie, and I commented how funny it would be to give something like that to our uptight teacher. To my surprise, Laura hauled me in there and we bought the tackiest set of red, ruffled, see-through lingerie I’d ever seen. We couldn't stop laughing every time we pulled it out of the bag. Since we were having a sleepover, we wrapped it up that night and put a big bow on it. We couldn't wait until Monday to sneak it onto our Social teacher’s desk. For the first time, ever, I couldn't wait to get to school. Before Social, I asked to go to the bathroom before the bell rang. I grabbed the present from my locker (hidden in a bag) fast-walked to Mr. M’s room and peaked in. Luckily he wasn't there and I put the present on his desk before dashing back to my other class. I gave Laura a thumbs up as we walked to his class, and we had to hold in our smiles when we took our seats.

Mr. M came in after the bell and made a big fuss when he spotted the present. He exclaimed at what a nice surprise it was from our class and since everyone was basically afraid of him, no one denied that they’d given it to him. It took every ounce of will power not to look at Laura as he undid the elaborate wrapping, lifted the box cover and pawed through the layers of tissue paper. His dumbfounded, shocked expression was priceless when he held up the lingerie, trying to figure out what it was. The class was hysterical with everyone laughing and finally, I could give in and join them. It was awesome. Mr. M got so mad that his face turned purple, especially when Greg Brienza (who’d woken at all the noise and seen the gift) fell backwards in his chair from laughing so hard.

Laura and I, ‘the innocent quiet girls’, got away with this payback prank. To this day, no one- except now you- knows we were behind it. It became a legend in our class and school and- poor Greg Brienza- got detention for ‘distracting the class’. Mr. M blamed him and muttered something about Italians… but it was the last negative thing he said about our nationality. Justice was served!

Just a Little Update..

Things have been so crazy lately! But I have published and replied to every comment that was left, so if you left one, thank you and sorry it took forever to get back to you. Also, I have a few blog posts that will be going up this week, so everything should be getting back on track. This month has been absolutely busy, and I didn't prepare for it at all. Also, congratulations to Shannon and Joie for winning the GlaDOS and Stickers giveaways respectively and thank you to everyone that entered both of those giveaways. Its my hope to have another giveaway in April, probably after WonderCon.

Congratulations to Jackie for winning the Pokemon DVD giveaway! The package has been sent, so hopefully it finds you soon :) Thank you to everyone who entered! I'd also like to remind everyone that the Portal themed giveaway ends in just a few hours, and the sticker giveaway ends in a day. And to add a little pizzazz to the stickers giveaway, I'm adding a set of Espionage Cosmetics nail wraps to the giveaway! Its the Cunning design, which I think is Doctor Who related (I don't know, I think I'm the only person who doesn't watch that show lol).

Happy Birthday IGGPPC! An Interview and a Giveaway! (CLOSED)

If you've been reading along these past few months, I'm sure you've seen me talk about International Geek Girl Pen Pals Club on more than one occasion. So imagine my great surprise to find out that they are celebrating their first birthday just a few days after my 30th! March is a great month for birthdays, what can I say? Emily Farquharson, co-founder of IGGPPC, recently took the time to answer some questions about the group- where they started, where they want to go, and do guys really sign up for pen pals? Read on to find out!

1.This has been a busy time for IGGPPC! A new site, a first birthday...When you started IGGPPC, what did you hope would come from it?
It's crazy busy at HQ, we are nonstop with the planning for the birthday and beyond! When we very first started Leslie and I really just wanted candy! We never thought it would become this amazing, versatile community that it has become at the time. The best things are those you aren't expecting to happen! -F

2. Do you feel like the response from geeky girls/guys has been largely positive, or have there been some Negative Nellies in regard to IGGPPC and its community?
You know, we are so lucky, the response to the project has been resoundingly positive and there has been no negativity within our ranks. We've nurtured an environment of support and acceptance that is universally embraced across our members, which just makes IGGPPC a fantastic community to be involved with. There have been a few people who have tried to goad us into petty arguments on twitter but we don't rise to the bait. Internet survival 101: don't feed the trolls!

3. And speaking of guys... are there any that actually sign up for pen pals?
Yes! They are definitely in the minority but their numbers are steadily growing!

4. Is there anything you'd like to achieve with IGGPPC that you have yet to?
So much! We joke a lot about one day being able to have a proper IGGPPC convention with all the trimmings; like comic con but with more stationery and Lisa Frank stickers.

5. There are so many fun things going on to celebrate your birthday; a week of giveaways, a birthday video and a House competition. Regarding the House competition, I am stuck between two Houses. I will be House GlaDOS until March 13th, then its onto House Organa. Should I post my awesomeness to both houses or how does that work?
Hot damn that is tricky, as leader of house GlaDOS I am inclined to say stay with us until after the comp because switching teams half way a game is just not cricket. The amount of people who are so generously giving their time and products to help us celebrate our first year has blown us all away. A lot of the prizes for the week of giveaways have come from shops owned by our members which just makes it even more special!

6. Anything else you'd like to say about the community that we didn't touch on?
I do not have enough superlatives in my vocabulary to express my love for all aspects of IGGPPC. Where would I even start? The beautiful friendships that have blossomed; the candies, mix tapes and postcards swapped; the healthy twitter debates about everything and anything; the generous nature of our staff and members who give up chunks of time to organise, plan and promote the club; the list goes on and on. If I dwell on it too much it kicks me right in the feels because I cannot wrap my wee pea brain around the fact that a project we started on a whim has turned into this magnificent beast!

If you have never signed up to get a pen pal, do it! You never know you might be a top 5 geek love away from meeting your new best friend!

For those of you that are not IGGPPC members, Iggles and Miggles are broken up into Houses by their age. House GlaDOS houses the twenties basically, and the House Organa is for the 30+. Currently, House GlaDOS is winning the competition. The House competition started March 3rd and is running through April 3rd, 2014. The giveaways are happening March 13th (Happy Birthday to me!)- March 19th (Happy Birthday IGGPPC), 2014. Every day is a new prize, and they're all pretty awesome.

Now for my giveaway! As my way of saying goodbye to House GlaDOS, I am giving away some Portal gear. If you subscribe to Loot Crate, it may look familiar to you. And it should, as this came from September's (I think) crate :) Also, I am giving away a super cool measuring cup that looks like a beaker and an ice cube tray that resemble a tiny elements chart. Now for the rules:

This is open to US addresses only. Once the giveaway is over, a winner will be contacted by email and has 48 hours to respond to that email. If no response is received within that time frame a new winner will be chosen. No giveaway accounts can be used for entries in this contest. That means, if you do what the widget says and one of your entries is chosen, and I can very obviously tell that you use that FB/IG/Twitter/Tumblr/BlogLovin account for contests only, your winner status will be thrown out and a new winner will be chosen. This contest is not sponsored, and is not affiliated with Loot Crate, Portal, IGGPPC or Target. I purchased everything for this contest.

Good luck!!
